Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s request honoured at funeral

Posted by on January 2, 2022 0

Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s entreaty that his coffin be “as cheaply as possible” was honoured at his funeral on Saturday.

The event was held in St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town; Tutu’s ashes will be inhumed behind the pulpit.

The late cleric was buried in an unadorned pinewood coffin in line with his “no lavish spending” wish.

Tutu, 90, had also requested that the only flowers in the church be a bouquet of carnations from his family.

The legendary activist and first black archbishop in South Africa won the Nobel Peace Prize for his stand against apartheid in 1994.

President Cyril Ramaphosa presented the country’s flag to his wife, Nomalizo, after a glowing tribute.

Ramaphosa hailed the deceased for fighting for freedom, justice, equality and peace throughout the world.

He said Tutu’s impact has been recognized by “past and present presidents, religious leaders, monarchs, legislators, political parties, musicians, artists and ordinary people.”

Letsie III, the King of Lesotho (Dalai Lama’s representative), ex-Irish President Mary Robinson, among others attended the funeral.
