Champions League: ‘Without Karim, we scored seven’ – Ancelotti speaks on Hazard’s role
Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti, has backed winger Eden Hazard’s recent performances in the absence of striker Karim Benzema.
Ancelotti said Real Madrid has scored seven goals without Benzema, who sustained a knee injury during Los Blancos’ UEFA Champions League opener against Celtic last week.
Hazard replaced Benzema in the 30th minute and contributed one goal and one assist in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win against Celtic.
The Belgium international then started Real Madrid’s La Liga home match against Mallorca at the weekend but could not produce a goal contribution and was subbed off in the 59th minute for Luka Modric as Real Madrid went on to win 4-1.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League tie with RB Leipzig on Wednesday, Ancelotti said (via MARCA): “He did what we asked of him. My personal opinion is that he did what he had to do, like the team, and that’s the most important thing.
“Before the match against Mallorca, I said I wasn’t asking him for goals. Without Karim, we have scored seven.”
