Collaborate with security operatives to track criminals in your domains – Ishaku tells traditional rulers

Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba State has again admonished traditional rulers spread across the state to collaborate with security agencies to nip in the bud the security challenges bedeviling their domains.

Ishaku, who made the call on Friday while presenting staff of office to some third-class monarchs in the state, was also observed to have urged them to hold tenaciously to justice and fairness in discharging their assigned responsibilities.

He reminded them that they are father to the people and must “uphold with utmost sense of duty, justice, and fairness to your subjects, other residents of your communities, and the state at large.”

“You have now become the chief security officer of your respective areas of jurisdiction; hence, you must collaborate with security operatives in tracking criminally minded persons bent on sabotaging our peace-building effort which is necessary for any meaningful development,” he added.

Ishaku, who noted that he had in the past sanctioned traditional leaders who have stood in the way of progress, vowed “not to think twice about doing so again if any monarch is found to be engaging in activities prejudicial to peace.”

He said his administration had made it a cardinal mission to reinvent the traditional institutions in light of population growth and to allow ethnic nationalities to promote, protect and project their cultural heritage as well as strengthen communal fraternity and that above all to enhance security.

According to him, his administration has been inspired by the overwhelming support for democratic action to reform and broaden “our cherished traditional institution across the length and breadth of the state, as attested to by more communities calling for their own chiefdoms.”

Ishaku said as more communities comply with the stringent conditions, his administration will continue to create more chiefdoms in the state, affirming that “the goal of the exercise is to bring governance closer to the people, not to separate them.”

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau For Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bello Yero, said that the newly appointed third-class chiefs followed the demise of the former occupants of the stools and hence the need to fill in the vacant positions.

“The last time an occasion of this nature took place was on 28th May 2021 when the chief of Ekpan, Joel Yerima Jatau was presented with the staff of office, while the presentation for Kabri was unavoidably deferred,” he said.

With the creation of additional four chiefdoms, as observed by our state correspondent, the exercise has brought the total number of chiefdoms created since his administration began to 51, and in addition to the existing 17 chiefdoms met on ground has brought to a total of 68 chiefdoms.
