The Kwara State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct all the 16 local governments in the state and relevant ministries to liaise with the state Geographic Information Service to make the creation of modern standard markets across the state a reality.

The House further urged the governor to direct local all governments to commence the immediate clean-up of markets by ensuring that all markets operate according to their master plans.

It also called on the leadership of the market associations to sensitize their members on the dangers inherent in the conversion of access roads and other facilities in the markets to other uses in contravention of their master plans.

These were part of the resolution by the House on Tuesday in Ilorin on a motion on the need to establish more modern markets designated for specific goods and services and restore sanity in existing ones in the state.

The motion was moved by the House Leader, Magaji Abubakar Olawoyin (Ilorin Central) and seconded by Awodiji Omotayo Felix (Irepodun).

Magaji said he was conscious that, Kwara State has developed to a stage of having standard modern specialized markets as obtainable in places like Aba, Idi-Iroko (Ogun State), Gate market, Ibadan, Alaba Market Lagos, Onisha main market to mention but a few.

He expressed concern that the available markets in the state especially those within the metropolis were already congested with distortion of the original master plan while access roads within the markets have been converted to places for display of wares.

The House Leader acknowledged, that if new markets are established by the state government and marketers are called to order to maintain the design in the existing ones, it would promote and ease the stress of buying and selling and expand the revenue base of the state, decongest all our urban centres and discourage rural-urban migration within the state.
