Customs Strike Force arrest 3 smugglers, intercepts contrabands worth N110,89m in Katsina
The Zone B Customs Strike Force Team, comprising North West, North East and North Central states have arrested 3 smugglers and intercepted several contrabands in Katsina State with duty paid value to the tune of N110.89 million naira.
The head of the Zone B team, Alhaji Useni Aliyu Olurukooba, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the Katsina Command on Tuesday.
Olorukooba said: “For the purpose of statistics, we have seized 450 bags of 50kg each of foreign parboiled rice, 100 bags of 25kg each of rice, 300 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 790 cartons of foreign soap, 52 cartons of drugs and one motorcycle.The grand total of the duty paid value of all the items seized within the last quarter (October to December) in the Katsina axis here is N110,890,000.”
The briefing he said marks parts of the activities for the last quarter excises for the zone.
Olyrukooba also disclosed that the arrests were made from various borders: Jibia/Katsina road borders, Kano roads, Batsari roads among others.
According to him, ’’the interception and arrests demonstrates that no matter how much investment the smugglers made on contraband items, it will eventually turn a waste’’
‘’Olyrukooba credited the recorded successes in the zone to the “relentless efforts of the CGS and the support of the various zones’’
He however disclosed that “those arrested were earlier detained and after obtaining their statement were later released since the offence were bailable and they are expected to appear in courts.’’
Smuggling activities he said “has negative impacts on the economy of the country and the state. It is hazardous and affects the health of the people.”
He urged the media to help the operations to sanitize the people, the communities and traditional rulers on the harmful effect of smugglers activities on the nation’s economy while assuring that the agency will explore every effort to block the chances of smugglers.
