Delta community halts protests over sacked workers at SPDC site as Okowa intervenes

The Ogulagha Community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State today promised that its youths will halt a protest at the Forcados Terminal of the Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, with the hope that all agreements reached will be implemented.

Ogulagha Community’s Chairman, Mr. Johnbull Ogobiri, made the promise during a meeting with Governor Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa and SPDC officials at the Government House Annex, Warri.

This is coming as Governor Okowa intervened in the matter with a promise to take over the payments of the 20 workers who were allegedly sacked by SPDC in the community in 2020.

Ogulagha Community youths had barricaded SPDC’s gate during a peaceful protest at the front of Forcados Terminal over the alleged sack of 20 workers from the company in 2020 within the next three months.

The youths also accused the oil firm of failure to reinstate the sacked workers as earlier promised.

Governor Okowa, who was represented by the Commissioner for Oil & Gas, Mr. Emmanuel Amgbaduba, said, “As you know, our governor operates a people oriented government and the interest of safety and balance between the host communities and the oil companies.

“We have used this meeting to do a soul searching period for us to know the needs of our people and address them.

“As for today, there’s been a protest at the Forcados terminal at Ogulagha and the government deemed it fit to intervene to avoid it escalating.

“The issues raised have been addressed and we are planning to have another meeting on September 27 to seal up the whole process as we have agreed.

“We agreed that in the interest of peace, the government will take over the payment of the staff as entrenched in the next three months effective from 2nd of September and we also appealed to the oil company to collaborate with the Community Chairman and rebuild their access procedure to allow authorized persons from the Community to relate with the company.”
