Empower village heads to end insecurity – Segun Showunmi tells govt

Segun Showunmi, the spokesperson for the Abubakar Atiku 2019 presidential campaign, has made case for the inclusion of Baales in solving the security problems facing the nation, especially in the Southwest.

Showunmi said Baales, who are local chiefs in charge of villages, local communities or settlements, are the closest to the people and the government must empower them to secure the localities.

The Ogun Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant called for the devolution of powers to the traditional chiefs to stem the tide of insecurity in the country.

He said the village heads are the first level of security in their areas, hence the need for administrative and legal structures that would empower them in carrying out their duties.

Showunmi stated this in Abeokuta during a meeting with Baales in Ogun Central as part of his consultation ahead of the 2023 governorship election.

Addressing the Egba Baales drawn from Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Obafemi Owode, Odeda, Ifo and Ewekoro Local Government Areas, Showunmi maintained that Baales are not in any competition with the Obas, saying they should be allowed to perform their roles to drive the security and development at the grassroots.

“I am particularly concerned that we have not been able to find an administrative structure to accommodate Baales and take advantage of the closest they are to the people and the proximity to the land and it has cost us gravely.

“Part of the reason we have not been able to secure our fringes is that we have not given any responsibility to our Baales,” he stated.

The aspirant hinted that the time has come to create a framework, where the local chiefs would be saddled with bigger security roles known to the public.

He suggested that the chiefs, after being given responsibilities, should also be accorded the wherewithal to be able to carry out the duties.

“If we must be secured, if we must develop evenly, if we must be prosperous, then we must figure out how to devolve more powers to the Baales,” Showunmi said, promising to amend the Ogun Chiefs Law to address what he termed the “neglect of Baales” if he becomes the governor of Ogun State.
