EPL: Arsenal under fire for appointing Mikel Arteta instead Antonio Conte
Former Arsenal youth team player, Jay Bothroyd has slammed the Gunners for not appointing ‘world class’ Antonio Conte as their manager before Tottenham.
He also said that all hopes of Arsenal finishing top four in the Premier League was gone following their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Thursday.
Bothroyd said that Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta lacks ‘leadership qualities’, which, according to him, was evident in their 3-0 defeat to Spurs on Thursday.
Bothroyd, who came through Arsenal academy, was left fuming with the Gunners’ performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And the former Cardiff City and Queen Park Rangers’ striker said his former side will now miss out on a place in the top four due to the lack of belief in the ranks.
Asked if the Gunners stand any chance in the top four, he told Kick Off, “I can’t see that happening now.
“If Arsenal do get in the Champions League, I wonder what they’ll be like then when they’re in four competitions.
“These are the kinds of game where I question Arteta’s leadership qualities.
“This is what makes me question whether he’s the right man for the job.
“I don’t see leadership qualities at all.
“It’s poor, it’s mentally weak, and that stems from Arteta. Unfortunately, these are the kind of games where I question him.
“You can play against teams like Brighton and Burnley, where Arsenal win games and you say, ‘Oh, he’s great’, and so on.
“I don’t think this would happen with Conte.
“This is why I was I was saying I wish Arsenal just took Conte before Tottenham did, because they would have, arguably, one of the best managers in the world.”
