EPL: Chelsea hold Liverpool to 2-2 draw, but Manchester City won

It was not the result either team wanted.

At full time, the scoreboard at Stamford Bridge read: Chelsea 2 – Liverpool 2.

Somewhere, in a neatly decorated flat in Manchester, Pep Guardiola smiles and sips on a glass of cold red wine.

On Saturday, City survived a resilient Arsenal side at the Emirates to go 11 points clear at the top. The champions had gone one goal down after Bukayo Saka finished off a fantastic team move in the first half.

However, the Gunners self-destructed in less than five minutes. First, Granit Xhaka foolishly tugged back Bernardo Silva inside the box and Riyad Mahrez smashed in the equalizer from the spot. Gabriel Martinelli missed an empty net at the other end before Gabriel Magalhaes picked up a silly second booking.

With essentially the last kick of the game, Rodri won it for Guardiola’s men.

You can imagine the entire City squad sitting around their TV sets on Saturday evening, as the second took on third.

Liverpool raced into a two-goal lead, thanks to Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah. But the opening 45 minutes had more drama in store, as Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic produced two fantastic finishes to bring the game level.

There were no goals in the second half.

That means City are 10 points clear and Guardiola is set to win his fourth league title in England.

It would indeed take a miracle for any of the teams below them to overhaul the Etihad side. They have the talent, they have the experience and they are in red-hot form.
