EPL: Kane wasn’t red-carded against Liverpool because he’s England captain – Perry Groves

Former Arsenal midfielder, Perry Groves has said that Tottenham striker Harry Kane’s status as England captain was the major reason referee, Paul Tierney did not give a red card for a late tackle on Liverpool’s Andy Robertson during their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Kane was only yellow-carded after leaving the Reds left-back in a heap and many believe the punishment should have been far more severe.

Groves said the challenge could’ve broken Robertson’s leg and referee Tierney ‘bottled’ the decision.

“It should’ve been a red card,” Groves said on talkSPORT.

“Harry Kane hasn’t been sent off because he’s England captain.

“Paul Tierney, the referee, has bottled it.

“Kane’s slid in, Robertson’s done well because he knows he’s going to be late so he just rides the challenge and Kane catches him with his foot off the floor.

“It’s a red card but because it’s Harry Kane and he’s the England captain… if Robertson doesn’t ride the challenge and his foot isn’t planted on the floor, it breaks his leg.”
