EPL: Man Utd to reduce Ronaldo’s wages after failure to qualify for Champions League

Posted by on May 8, 2022 0

Manchester United’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League will see some of their players’ wages cut by 25%, SportsMail reports.

The Red Devils’ 4-0 defeat at Brighton means they cannot finish in the top four.

There will be financial consequences for yet another disappointing campaign, because of the way the Old Trafford club structures their player contracts.

The cut in wages is designed to protect United from the drop in revenue that results from not qualifying for Europe’s top club competition.

United will earn significantly less in prize money and broadcast revenue if they play in the UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo faces a reduction from £385,000 per week to around £288,000 if he stays for next season, the lowest salary the 37-year-old has earned in some years.

The club’s second-highest earner, goalkeeper David de Gea, stands to see his pay cut from £375,000-a-week to around the £281,000-a-week mark.
