EPL: Mikel Arteta told to appoint Kieran Tierney as Arsenal’s new captain

Arsenal hero, Ian Wright has told manager, Mikel Arteta to appoint former Celtic defender, Kieran Tierney, as the club’s new captain.

Arsenal earlier announced that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is no longer their captain.

The 32-year-old Gabon international was omitted from Arsenal’s matchday squads for the wins over Southampton and West Ham.

Arteta will announce a leader for the Gunners but have to make do with the leadership of Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka at this point.

And Ian Wright would like to see 24-year-old left-back Tierney take up the role.

“I’m probably going with Kieran Tierney, if I’m being totally honest,” he told Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast.

“I’m looking at Kieran Tierney simply because he plays and leads by example and if he’s fit then he probably makes every single team that I pick for Arsenal simply because of the way he plays.

“If we’re talking about a captain that we want to look at on the pitch who is not afraid to of telling others they’re not doing this and that, then probably Kieran Tierney should be the next captain.

“Coming from Celtic and captaining Celtic, a massive club. He knows what it takes to be able to captain a club of stature.”

Aubameyang will not be in Arsenal’s squad to face Leeds United in Saturday’s Premier League match.

Arteta had named a 24-man squad to tackle Leeds and excluded Aubameyang from the list.

Aubameyang has missed Arsenal’s last two games against Southampton and West Ham after being stripped of the club’s captaincy.
