EPL: What happens to Man Utd now Solskjaer has been sacked
The VAR check is complete. It is confirmed. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no longer Manchester United manager.
For the longest, it felt as if the 48-year-old was going to be in the Old Trafford seat for a lifetime.
Like the proverbial cat with nine lives, Solskjaer escaped the sack several times, coming up with fluke results when his job was on the line.
But this time, there was no coming back from a string of disgraceful results.
First, the 5-0 humiliation of Liverpool and then the 2-0 ‘thrashing’ in the Manchester Derby, both at Old Trafford.
In these two games, their rivals barely got out of first gear and when they were assured of three points, they took the foot of the pedal, showing ‘mercy’ on United.
Yesterday, it was the same and different both at the same time. Watford, who have struggled to win points on the table, took a two-goal lead at Vicarage Road. And when Donny van de Beek pulled one back, Claudio Ranieri’s men took offence literally and netted twice in stoppage time.
Even Solskjaer knew it was over, before the emergency board meeting that was held virtually.
Manchester United have confirmed former player Michael Carrick, who was part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff, will take charge as a caretaker. They also noted their intention to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season.
One wonders why Carrick has been kept on. He was part of Solskjaer’s assistants and together, they have given the fans the worst period post-Sir Alex Ferguson.
The hesitation to hire Antonio Conte has come back to bite them. Because United are now desperately circling around Zinedine Zidane, who is not entirely keen on the job.
We are at the business end of this year in football with games coming thick and fast. Next up is a Champions League trip to Villarreal.
If Solskjaer had won the Europa League final against the Yellow Submarines, he would have still been the manager at Old Trafford. Not firing him afterwards was a misstep. And it feels the Glazers and Ed Woodward will take more missteps before they stumble on stability again.
However, for the alleged worst manager in the history of the club, his time is over.
