EPL: You could get punished – Wayne Rooney warns Rangnick
Former Manchester United star, Wayne Rooney has told Ralf Rangnick to start building a team and not a group of individual players.
Rooney said he is concerned about the new system under Ralf Rangnick, adding that teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City could punish United.
The German manager suffered his first defeat in charge of Manchester United on Monday with a 1-0 loss at home to Wolves.
Rooney believes the tactics being brought about by Rangnick could ‘punish’ United when they play the top teams.
“I’ve been to a few games, taken my kids,” Rooney told The Athletic.
“Obviously it’s been difficult for them. I think it had got to the point with Ole where everyone could see it was coming to an end.
“With the new manager now, you don’t know. I’m sure it’s a lot different to anywhere he has managed before. There’s a lot more pressure, managing a lot of high-profile players.
“I was at his first game against Crystal Palace and I thought they looked very good.
“My only concern, with that shape, was that when you come up against better teams – Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal – you could get punished.
“The most important thing is that the players need to buy into it. He needs to get them working as a group rather than as individuals.”
Manchester United’s next Premier League game is against Aston Villa and the Red Devils would hope to bounce back from their shock defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford.
The defeat meant that Rangnick’s men are now four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with their hope of playing in the Champions League next season gradually fading away.
