EPL: You’ve joined Newcastle for money – Agbonlahor tells Trippier

Former Aston Villa striker, Gabriel Agbonlahor has said that England right-back Kieran Trippier left Atletico Madrid for Newcastle United just for the money.

Newcastle announced the signing of the England international from Atletico Madrid on Friday with the player set to swap LaLiga titleholders and Champions League football for a relegation battle in the Premier League.

He also became the club’s first signing under their new ownership and was signed for about £12million.

By returning to England, the 31-year-old is now the Magpies highest ever paid player in history.

“He’s going to top up that retirement fund,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“Of course he is, he’s not going to be there at his peak when Newcastle will be challenging for European places, he’s gone there for the money,” Agbonlahor said, adding that he would do exactly the same if he saw the opportunity.

He said there was no other reason a player like Trippier would abandon European football for a relegation-threatened side like Newcastle if not the money.
