Excess borrowing, problem of Ogun State – Lawmaker Adebutu
A former member of the House of Representatives, Ladi Adebutu has said Ogun State is among the “poorest” states in Nigeria due to excessive borrowing.
Adebutu said this on Wednesday at a meeting for members of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abeokuta.
DAILY POST recalls that the PDP had recently accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of borrowing almost N100 billion without projects on the ground.
The former lawmaker regretted that the State had become one of the poorest because those in governance engage in too much borrowing.
He queried what the loans obtained so far by the State were being used for.
“Some people will come, saying they’ve laid down some plans. They will say the road is smooth and very easy, but if you follow them, it leads to destruction and emptiness. This is because they don’t have the interest of the state and the people at heart. Theirs is to embezzle money and lavish the state resources.
“See how Ogun State is today; this is a state that is highly favoured by God. Among all the states in Nigeria, if you count one, two, three, Ogun State is supposed to be one of the states that will be in comfort. But, we are one of the poorest states today because we keep on borrowing. All those monies we borrowed, what are we using them for? Everything is based on lies,” Adebutu said.
While expressing confidence that PDP would take over Ogun in 2023, the governorship aspirant boasted that the opposition party has its structure spread across all polling units in the State.
He taunted the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over its internal wranglings, accusing it of fanning the embers of discord among PDP members.
“The PDP they said had died now has structures in every ward and every polling booth of this State. What we need now is to be united. Some are running helter-skelter, going to court; they want us to fight, but we will not fight. I’ve told them that any evil plot against us will fall back on them. Everything the APC wishes us shall be their portion. Everywhere our rights and entitlements are hidden, God should restore them for us. There shall be peace in Ogun State. There shall be peace in Nigeria,” he stated.
Adebutu charged PDP loyalists to go back home and start their ward meetings to strengthen the party for the 2023 elections, saying, “From this January, let’s start our ward meetings. I will be giving you the needed support. In Ogun State, we will run a government that is going to be transparent and open to audit.”
