Insecurity: Group tasks citizens on neighborhood watch

Worried by the uncertainty of ceaseless security challenges facing Nigeria, the Igbo Vanguard Group, IVG, Tuesday advised her citizens to form a neighbourhood watch/surveillance system in their various local communities.

IVG said it is high time communities served as the extra “eyes and ears” and report their observations of suspicious activities to their local law enforcement.

President- General of the group, Nnadozie Uchegbuo said this while interacting with newsmen in Umuahia, Abia State capital.

Further, Uchegbuo explained that Neighbourhood watch does not advocate members taking any action when observing suspicious activity in their neighbourhood.

Said he, “The security challenge in Abia State and Nigeria as a whole is on the increase and no one is safe. Our security agencies are not adequately equipped and are not doing enough to protect the citizenry. So, to assist them, the only solution is neighbourhood watch.

“If everyone must keep surveillance on each neighbour, high crime rate will be reduced to a manageable extent”.

Uchegbuo who exposed and expounded the essence of neighbourhood watch warned that failure to adopt this surveillance system might adversely affect the nation as a result of the prevailing high crime rate.
