Strike: Support ASUU to revitalize universities – LASU chair, Ashiru begs parents, students
Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and its chapter of the University of Lagos, Dr. Dele Ashiru has called for a revitalization of public universities in the federation.
Ashiru also urged the Federal Government to implement the agreements it signed in 2009 with the Union.
The ASUU boss made this call in a meeting held in Lagos, where he spoke on the topic “Putting an end to the perennial ASUU strike: The Role of the Academia, Government, Parents and Students”.
DAILY POST recalls that ASUU has been on strike for the past three months, as the Union and representative of government are yet to find a common ground.
In his address, Ashiru, who also called on the stakeholders for support, insisted that only the union would not get the the government into doing the necessary things to improve the educational system.
But he also regretted the criticism ASUU had been subjected to by the general public.
Part of his statement reads, “Nigerian Universities rather than being citadels of learning became citadels of violence, corruption, neglect, and mal-administration and the system brew various crimes.
“It was the ASUU agitation as a trade union of intellectuals that led to the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and 2012 ASUU ‘Needs Assessment of Nigeria Universities’.
“Parents must support ASUU in the agitation for restructuring the educational system”.
