Taraba council boss reiterates commitment to protect forest reserves

Amamzilla John Danladi Joseph, Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba, has revealed plans to restore forests in the area.

Among such plans as enumerated by him, is to commence the immediate planting of trees in order to replace those that were alleged to have been illegally felled by persons seeking shortcuts to success.

The chairman said that “in no distance time, the fast depliting forest reverses spread across the council would be restored to bring back its lost glory, as the most naturally endowed local government council in the state” while flagging off the second phase of 10,000 tree seedlings planting campaign in the area.

Due to the illegal felling of rosewood, which are fondly called Madrid, the council which is naturally endowed, was noticed to have become a shadow of itself, a situation stakeholders from the council and the state at large detested.

The ongoing tree planting which DAILY POST gathered to have been in conjunction with the state Ministry of Environment and the Process Woods Producer and Marketers Association of Nigeria, the chairman said would be carried out across all the forest reserves in the council.

Stressing that the ongoing exercise has the backing of the number one citizen of the state, Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku, the council, as reiterated by him, will tread all relevant paths to hurt the exercise from being frustrated.

The council, in conjunction with the state government, as well as the aforementioned ministry, he said will not leave any stone unturned, he said will work tirelessly round the clock to nurtured the already planted trees to maturity.

The said seedlings which DAILY POST learnt were made available to the council by the ministry of environment, as at the time of filing this report are being planted Ambwe, Bissaula, Baissa among other reserves.

Some persons from the council who expressed their sadness at the way and manner timbers are illegally being hew down in the area, believed that the ongoing exercise would not only help in addressing the massive deforestation going on in the area, but will as well protect the environment from natural disasters.
