UCL: You’re not up to standard – Villarreal blame one man for 3-2 defeat to Liverpool
Villarreal’s Chief Executive Officer, Fernando Roig Negueroles has blamed the referee for his side’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Tuesday.
Liverpool had a 2-0 victory in the first leg at Anfield, but found themselves 2-0 down at half-time in Spain, with goals from Boulaye Dia and Francis Coquelin.
But the Spanish club could not maintain that first half performance as a very dominant second-half display from Liverpool saw Fabinho, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz scoring to ensure that the Premier League giants booked a place in Paris.
Negueroles was not happy as he assessed the performance of the referee, Dutchman Makkelie, especially when he failed to award a penalty to the Yellow Submarines after the Liverpool goalkeeper seemed to have brought down a Villarreal player in the danger area.
“It was an outrageous penalty decision,” Negueroles told the press after the game, adding that the referee was of no level for the game.
“I don’t see any possible interpretation. The refereeing has been terrible, it has always gone in their favour.
“This refereeing is not up to standard for a time like this.
“There were a lot of small actions that have gone in their favour.
“I’m not too annoyed, I’m proud to get this far, but the refereeing was very bad,” he added.
